CF Armoury: Competitor Program Open Forum - Week 1
SATURDAY; October 10, 2015 @ Crossfit Armoury <photo credit: Crossfit Armoury> |
First day with 28 people in attendance, especially on a Thanksgiving Weekend (I live in Canada, and we celebrate it earlier than the folks in the US).
The premise of this group is:
for CrossFit Competitors in Edmonton who have, are, and will continue to attend weekly meetings to discuss CrossFit Competition Preparation. Weekly group meetings will consist of 30 mins of discussion about competition preparation, and a high intensity, competition based training session.
As this was the first of many sessions, Coach Aiden asked how we wanted to structure the class. Asking around the room, many suggestions were place onto the board. Decisions were made on how long some of the discussions would last. It may include feature speakers and/or areas of interest.
One of the focus today, was what did people learned from their first compeitiion. The question was directed at the group that recently went to VO2 Max in Grand Prairie.
Coach Aiden wanted the people to share there experience with the rest of the class, especially those like myself who had not competed in a Crossfit Competition. I'm not including the Opens nor the Team Series (Which you usually tend to include people from within your crossfit box).
There were many questions asked by the group. Here are some of them:
- Training for competition
- Competition Nutrition
- Recovery
- Programming
- Mental Strategies
- Clothing, what to wear
- When to start tapering off on the training
- When to start focusing on training if the WODs are known
- What movements should I focus on before the competition
- How many rest days I should do before the competition
After the talk, we did an intense WOD. Because of the size of our group that attended, we were partner up in groups of 3s and 2s. In my case, I was partner up with Jonathan F.
WOD:
In Groups:
3 Rounds: (30 seconds ON/ 30 seconds OFF)
- Overhead Squats (using a weight you can managed hangin on to for 30 seconds)
- Bar facing Burpees
- Double unders
3 Rounds: (30 seconds ON/ 30 seconds OFF)

- Double Kettlebell Thrusters
- Box Jump Overs
- Row @ 5 Damper
3 Rounds: (30 seconds ON/ 30 seconds OFF)
- Hang Squat snatch (aiming 8 to 10 reps)
- Toes to Bar
- Shuttle Run
This WOD was a burner, I actually scaled a few of the movements, just like in class. I also opted to use a lighter weight for most of the workouts as my body wasn't quite recovered after the day before, Crossfit Team Series - Week 2. We did Event 5, 7, and 8 in one day.
After today, I will take some time off from Crossfit to recover. Have some follow ups with my physiotherapist on my shoulders, get a massage done two days before my next competition (Saturday, October 17th).
That competition is called Festivus Games, it will be my first official Crossfit competition outside of my box. Looking forward to it!!!
Thanks for reading...
