for CrossFit Competitors in Edmonton who have, are, and will continue to attend weekly meetings to discuss CrossFit Competition Preparation. Weekly group meetings will consist of 30 to 60 mins of discussion about competition preparation, and a high intensity, competition based training session.
Discussion focus around training through injuries.
Okay, let's face it. We've all been there! Pushing thru that last round, just to finish and you know you shouldn't, but did. And of course, shortly after that; you're seeking medical attention. I'm guilty of this and thus today's discussion focus on training thru injuries.
A great topic, as we all gathered around the table (some of us who just finished a class, others there just for the discussion and WOD to follow).
We had a guest speaker, Arri McWatt; physiotherapist for Optimize Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic . Arri covered areas that are common injuries for crossfit and what can be done. He recommend certain exercises to strengthen for the affected areas. We also went around the table and ask what each of us had for injuries, and what we did to overcome them. Arri and some of the coaches ('Cat', Kyle L, Kyle S, Aiden) were in attendance as well. We had 18 people in attendance for this discussion.
For me, it was nice to see what the coaches did when they suffered injuries, and how they train thru it. I always picture in my head that Coaches are bullet proof and it was a bit shocking for me to see them in physio. But I guess, we are all human after all and when you push oneself, things can happen.
As Coach Kyle S., had mentioned, if your doing a movement and it hurts; STOP!! Don't keep pushing thru!! Talk to the coach that is teaching the class and they can make a better evaluation on what to do next. I
t could be a simple correction on the technique or it may be a suggestion to seek medical advice, like a physiotherapist. Did I mention there is a nice physiotherapy place right next door? <--those are my words, not Coach Kyle S.
With regards to training thru the injuries; one should see a physiotherapist and then advise the coach who's teaching the class that you need to scale the workout. There is nothing wrong with scaling, as you are still doing the workouts, but within the limitations of your movements.
As mentioned by Aiden, the WODs today and tomorrow (Sunday) will focus on the upcoming Crossfit competition - Winter Massacre 2016 held next week at Crossfit Lineage. Event 1 WOD is being used for today and Event 2 WOD will be used tomorrow (Sunday) for those who want to practice for the competitor class.
As for me, I only attended the discussion as I just finished the class prior. Heading into a day of rest before starting up with training next week.
