Crossfit Armoury - February 24, 2018: Crossfit Open, got convinced into participating... oye

Ugh... got bumped up an age class (division)

So, the Crossfit Open is upon us.   I had the intention of actually skipping another year of it.   With me not actually training in Crossfit and mostly been doing Olympic lifting.  It would be probably 5 weeks of poor results or just plain craziness.

However, this year; our crossfit box decided to organized the competitions a bit different.  it was done in an Intramural style.     Even though, each athlete would do the workout individually; the aspect of being part of a team would make it more supportive and fun; especially for those who may have never done a Crossfit Open before.

It was the case with the team that I joined, the Expendables.  There were three of the eight people who had never done an Open.

Looking at the rules for the in house competition, one of the things that was suggested was for all of us to do our Judges course.   I had started it prior to leaving on my trip and I actually didn't finish it until I was in Arizona.   For the first time in the almost 5 years of Crossfit; I actually went and wrote the Judges course online.   Valid for one year.

Completed my Judges course for 2018;
time for some No Reps!!!

See the attachment on how our in-house competition is structured.

Prior to the Open even starting, recruitment for members to join a team started shortly after this was posted.  Once teams were built, the social media campaign began.  There were posting to our private internal Facebook page and as well to external ones such as Instagrams and members Facebook.  Trash talks started and the creativity of the teams started to form.  Some of the teams even made shirts, pullovers/jackets and various clothing items.   What a way to kick off the Open!

I'll update next week the score for the in-house competition.

As for my score for 18.1 (see picture below).

My Crossfit Open 18.1 score - Scaled

I was quite surprised and was happy with the results.  Considering that my flight back from Arizona wasn't until Sunday at 12:30 AM (Edmonton time, flight was late arrive by 30 minutes due to a storm from in British Columbia).   We didn't arrive home and finally hitting the bed until 2:30 AM.  I had originally arrange to judge Rob, and he would do the same for me at 10  AM.  Which mean, I really didn't have that much time to sleep.

After feeding my body (breakfeast and allowing for 1.5 hour before working out - so I don't end up throwing it back up).   I remember arriving at the box, half awake with my Americano in one hand, and workout gear duffle bag in the other; shuffling my feet as I enter box.  While the bulk of the box had already done the competition the night before, there was a class that was running and a small area that was setup in the back for weekend testing.   Class space always takes precedence.

Part of me was surprised that WOD - 18.1 ran so smoothly.   I may have to give it credit for making me so tired that I really didn't blow out of the gates too fast and kept a steady pace.   It was until round the last two rounds that I would start to break up the repetitions.

Looking forward to next week, 18.2  as I get to meet some of the members on  team Expendables.
