Crossfit Armoury - May 14, 2018: Olympic Lifting

Monday; May 14, 2018 @ Crossfit Armoury - West

Coach:  Jason Roncesvalles

Thoughts:
It's been a while that an olympic lifting class from Armoury had taken me 90 minutes to finish.   And I mean, I did all my sets with both Snatches, Cleans and Jerks.  Some of my classmates did only 2 waves of Snatches and 3 sets of Cleans and Jerks.

Today, the olympic lifting class had changed from 7 pm to 6 pm.  For most people, you know I usually do the WOD prior to Olympic lifting.  However, I wasn't able to get to class at 5 PM today and had to opt for Olympic lifting, and then follow up with the Crossfit Class afterwards.  Well, that was my initial plan; but it fell apart as I just couldn't finish all my sets in 60 minutes.

Full on sweat, never sweated that much even to the surprise of my classmates and coach.  I felt very sticky..   it was a bit hot/humid and not a lot of wind movement.   It was also hot outside, about 26 C.

And adding to my delay with the start was that I had printed off the incorrect sheet with my pre-calculated numbers (because I just hate having to scramble around with my phone and figure out percentage).  Another 10 minutes lost, scrambling to find a spare pen.

The basic warm-up is very similar to when Coach AJ was teaching, a few changes here and there.

Today, we worked on MUSCLE Snatches.  Something I'm not use to as I had to break away from muscling everything.  And then this.... muscle the Snatch.  Coach told us to not dip, which then is really the power snatch.  Had to break that thought in my head and start muscle'ing it.  Felt weird, and eventually build up to 95 lb.  Was about to do the 105 lb and got teased by everyone to add more weight.  Never got to my 3rd set of Muscle Snatches.  Whatever....

Next was the three waves of 1 Power Snatch + 1 Snatch with percentages starting at 60, 70, 75, 80, 85% (of Max Snatch).

Yes, this was where I lost 10 minutes running around looking for a damn pen and my phone to punch in the numbers...    So, here we were with some new numbers since my last PR with the snatch (162 lb).  What once was my 85% is now my 80% and my new 85% is about 5 lb heavier.  Surprisingly, today was the first time I was able to hit 130 lb for a power snatch, twice - successfully.  The 85% - 140 lb was not successful, as it forced me to do a squat snatch.  Just don't have that strength.   Plus coach wanted me to sit back a bit with my butt and not to lift my toes.

While most of the class had finished their 3 waves, there was another member; Amber and I who were the slow pokes. We were still starting our third wave.  The rest of the class had stripped their bars and was doing the warm-up for the Cleans and Jerks.  I asked coach if he wanted us to finish or strip the bar.  He told us to finish.

When the Clean & Jerk phase started for us; most of the class was on their 2nd set.   By the time, I had build up my weight to 75% of my 1 RM; most of the class were just finishing their 4 or 5th set.   Great... no pressure..  And others were putting away their weights; getting ready for the Crossfit Class.
Yes, the same one that I was going to do.  I ended up finishing my 5 sets of Clean & Jerks in the format of (below knee, above the knee, and Hang Clean) + Split Jerk after each of the three positions.

This took me an additional 30 minutes past the class, essentially 90 minutes.
Coach Jason was encouraging me to skip the strength portion of the CF class and just jump into the WOD.   Ideally, that would be great if I had anything left in my tank!  Surprised myself that I didn't today.  Kudos to some of my oly classmates for doing both.  Me, I just went and died after I had put away the weights.
